Donations Needed at Frederick Rescue Mission
Shortage of Turkey Donations May Leave Many Families without Thanksgiving Dinner

Frederick, MD, 5 Nov 2008 — The Frederick Rescue Mission may not reach their goal of distributing 400 Thanksgiving food boxes to needy families in Frederick for this year’s annual Turkey Drive, held now through November 22.

“Last year at this time we had a couple hundred turkeys, but right now we only have 41,” informed Guy Mutchler, Director of Food Services at the Mission. “If we don’t get more donations soon, we’re going to be turning a lot of families away empty-handed for Thanksgiving, which we do not want to do.”

The Rescue Mission will be holding community sign-ups for the food boxes—which include a turkey, boxed stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, three cans corn, three cans green beans, two cans cranberry sauce, and two cans poultry gravy—November 10-14.

“Usually I have a good idea as to how many sign-ups we can take according to the donations we’ve received,” Mutchler comments. “This year I’m going to have to tell a lot of people I’m not sure if we can get them the boxes or not.”

The distribution of the food boxes will be held November 22 from 2-4pm on Mission property. Last year the Mission gave out 379 food boxes, as well as cooked Thanksgiving dinner for the homeless and working poor community in Frederick with the turkeys they had received. Overall they fed over 1700 people with the donations received.

Donations can be dropped off at the Frederick Rescue Mission—419 W South St in Frederick, and tax receipts are available.

The Frederick Rescue Mission is the largest provider of hot meals to the homeless and working poor in Frederick, serving 300 meals a day for breakfast and lunch, as well as distributing over 150 emergency food boxes to families each month. They also give out free clothing and furniture to the needy and are a recovery home for men overcoming drug and alcohol addictions.
