Halloween Walking Takes on a Different Style “It’s always such a great experience to get out and see the kids walking for a good cause,” commented Tommy Skaggs, Frederick Rescue Mission’s Director of Development. “It’s one of the easiest ways for students so young to do something of this magnitude for their community.” All 750 middle school walkers have the chance to be underwritten by a private sponsor to the Mission, in order to allow the students an opportunity to participate without paying the $15 registration fee. The only requirement is that the students get their parents to sign the registration form so that their participation in the walk will count. The mini-walk program is in conjunction with the FannieMae Walkathon, the largest Help the Homeless event in the United States, held November 22 in D.C. The event raised over $7 million last year to give to local charities and non-profits dedicated to helping the D.C. area’s over 12,000 homeless people. The Rescue Mission’s goal this year is 1,500 youth walkers. Thus far Walkersville Middle 7th grade, Middletown Middle 6th grade, and various private schools and homeschool groups have participated. The Frederick Rescue Mission is the largest provider of hot meals to the homeless and working poor of Frederick, serving 300 meals a day to needy men, women and children in the community. The Mission also provides over 100 emergency food boxes a month to families. They are a source of free clothing and furniture to the needy, and have this year given out over $19,000 worth of vouchers. The Frederick Rescue Mission: Bringing Hope to Frederick since 1964. |
