Answering the Growing Problem of Hunger Frederick, MD, 25 January 2010 — Everedy Square and Shab Row shop owners announce the Souper Sunday Empty Bowls Banquet March 21, 2010, at Frederick Cellars, to benefit the Frederick Rescue Mission’s Food Service programs, which recorded a 32% increase of meal provision in 2009 compared to 2008. Local and national potters are donating over 300 bowls to be sold for $25 at the Little Pottery Shop beginning February 6 to attendees of the event, which will consist of an array of delicious soups, breads, and desert donated by local restaurants and vendors, live jazz music, and a silent auction. All money raised will be donated to the Mission, Frederick’s largest provider of hot meals to the homeless and needy community, and a source of food boxes for families and individuals in need. “We are astounded at the significant amount of people in our own city going to the Frederick Rescue Mission for food assistance,” says Tammy Martinez of the Little Pottery Shop and a pottery donor for the event. “We wanted to work together creatively as a business community to use our skills to meet the needs of those who are hungry in our midst while also raising awareness about the wonderful work that the Rescue Mission does for our community every day.” The Frederick Rescue Mission served 90,168 meals in 2009 to hungry men, women, and children in need in Frederick—21,025 more meals than 2008. In addition to hot meals for breakfast and lunch, the Mission also distributes about 120 food boxes each month, to feed a family of four for three to five days. “We are extremely excited that Everedy Square and Shab Row shop owners are extending this effort to provide help for their neighbors,” says Executive Director of the Mission, Arnold Farlow. “It is because of caring people in Frederick pulling together to help that we can continue to offer much-needed food at no cost to those desperately in need.” For more information on the Empty Bowls Banquet, or to purchase your bowl and ticket to the event, contact Tammy at 301-620-7501, or visit www.everedysquare.com.
